Apprenticeship as bricklayer for building construction (EFZ / EBA)

Customer bricklayers

Around 12 years ago, I moved from Appenzell to Vaz/Obervaz because I wanted to work on the mountain railways in winter. I spent a long time in my home country in the summer months, where I worked in a large construction company. When I joined Paterlini four years ago, I was given a warm welcome and was immediately made to feel at home. We have a personal and collegial way of working here – everyone helps everyone, almost like in a family. I feel very comfortable and am happy living in the mountains all year round.

The reason I work at Paterlini is hockey! Growing up in Sufers, I had to go to Splügen for high school. Even then, I played at EHC Lenzerheide. It was clear to me that I wanted to stay near the Heidsee! So, I took advice from the hockey mums – everyone recommended Paterlini to me. I have now completed my apprenticeship as a bricklayer (Swiss Federal VET Diploma) and remain loyal to the Paterlini family. Now I speak Italian and feel very at home here. Even as an apprentice, I was treated respectfully and integrated into the team. I’m now able to take on more and more responsibility and work independently – it’s really fun!

I first came to Graubünden from Portugal more than 30 years ago and worked as a construction worker in Alvaneu for a summer season. In 2004, I moved permanently to Lenzerheide and started working for Duba-Bau. My boss at the time helped me train to become a foreman, which I really appreciated. After the company closed, I had to look for a new job. My brother and uncle were already at Paterlini and raved about the company. So, I applied. I’ve been working here for eight years now – and I want to stay until I retire! The main reason is that I get up in the morning and enjoy going to work.
